A new play area is to be built overlooking a town's harbour to celebrate its maritime heritage.

Work on the facility, in Bransty, Whitehaven, is set to start later this month and take about six weeks.

Cumberland Council said the site was designed for children aged up to six, drawing inspiration from the town's coastal setting, including a local fish and chip shop.

Executive member for vibrant and healthy places councillor Anne Quilter said feedback from residents had shaped plans for the facility.

"Inspired by Whitehaven's coastal setting, the design will give the play area a real sense of local character, and we hope it will be enjoyed by Bransty families for many years to come," she said.

The play area will sit alongside an existing community garden at Harbour View.

It is fully funded by the council as part of work to improve play areas and provide inclusive spaces for children and families.

The site will have a mix of dynamic and sensory equipment.
