Eight fire crews tackled a blaze above a town centre bakery while preventing it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service evacuated residents from nearby properties after being called to Simmons bakery on High Road, Broxbourne, at about 00:01 BST.

Crews from Ware, Cheshunt, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage and Potters Bar attended the incident.

An aerial ladder platform was used to help extinguish the fire after it spread to the roof space above the building.

Firefighters also deployed a drone to identify hotspots and to check whether the blaze had spread to neighbouring properties.

On their website, Simmons, the Hertfordshire-based bakery chain, said its Broxbourne store would "closed for refurbishment" between 2 and 8 July.
