A man and woman have died in a crash involving a car and a lorry, police said.

Officers from Lancashire Police were called to the incident on the A59 in Sawley, Clitheroe, at 15:44 BST on Saturday.

The driver of a green Mazda MX5, a 49-year-old man, and a 25-year-old woman passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

A force spokesperson said the male driver of a DAF truck, who was not injured, stopped at the scene and "is solely being treated as a witness in our enquiries".

The Mazda MX5 was travelling westbound towards Clitheroe from Gisburn while the truck was travelling eastbound towards Gisburn from Clitheroe, when the crash happened opposite Dunbia Abattoir on the A59 Gisburn Road.

The incident led to the road being closed for several hours.

Police have appealed for anyone with information or footage to contact them.

The force added its "thoughts are with their loved ones at this incredibly distressing time".
