A nature reserve will host wildlife and dog-friendly bonfires with no fireworks this year.

A Bonfire Night event will be held on Thursday at Brockholes on the outskirts of Preston in Lancashire.

Yasmin Shepherd, from the Lancashire Wildlife Trust, said the bonfire would be built from "wood from around the site that is a conservation by-product and would be burnt anyway" and could not be sold as logs.

The reserve will also have another bonfire on Saturday - again without fireworks - that will be suitable for families with young children or anyone with additional sensory needs.

Shepherd said they started the dog-friendly event last year and it was "really popular".

"We don't usually allow dogs on to the reserve to protect the wildlife," she added, but for "one night only" they would be welcome.

"We found that people really enjoyed it because it's away from other places with fireworks so it was less scary for the dogs.

"Families with young children also really enjoyed it because the fireworks with the bangs can be scary."
