Eddie Redmayne fined for speeding in 20mph zone
ReutersActor Eddie Redmayne has been fined after he was caught breaking a 20mph (32km/h) speed limit in London.
Redmayne, known for starring in The Day of the Jackal and his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, was recorded driving his Audi at 28mph (45km/h) on the A4 through Earls Court on 14 October last year.
He admitted being the speeding driver but submitted the form to the police too late to avoid a criminal prosecution.
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered by Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to pay a £1,000 fine, £130 in court costs and a £400 victim surcharge and received three penalty points on his licence.
The A4 Cromwell Road, where Redmayne was caught, became a 20mph road in 2023 as part of a Transport for London scheme to reduce speeds across 65km of London's roads.
The Metropolitan Police submitted an image of Redmayne's car and said that a notice of prosecution was sent out on 20 October, six days after the offence.
But Redmayne did not respond until 1 March this year and a police official told the court the response had not arrived in time to avoid a court case.
Redmayne was among 450 motorists prosecuted by the Metropolitan Police last week for breaching one of London's 20mph speed limits, with fines ranging from £40 to the maximum £1,000 penalty.
