Town records 250 drivers going wrong way in a year

More than 250 vehicles have been recorded being driven the wrong way in a Lake District town in a year.

Campaigners of Ambleside group, The Wrong Way received complaints of 263 incidents, 224 which were photographed on the town's roads from July 2025 to July 2026.

Traffic in the town, which is a tourist hot spot, has been managed by a one-way system for decades.

Westmorland and Furness Council acknowledged "poor driver behaviour was a major factor" and said it had renewed some old and missing signs and repainted road markings.

The campaign group said some offending drivers were also captured on video.

Co-founder of the group Andy Astle, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he was worried someone could be "seriously injured or killed".

"One of our major concerns is the pedestrian crossing on Rydal Road, as when people cross, because it is a one-way road, they won't necessarily look to the other side as they don't expect traffic to come from that way."

He said campaigners wanted "more enforcement" and prosecutions.

Parish councillor Andy Biggs, chairman of Lakes Parish Council, said he had "seen multiple incidents".

"We are extremely grateful to the council as it did take quite swift action in renewing the signs and painted lines.

"But I think the real issue is people driving without due care and attention, in particular visitors, but it is not just visitors."

A spokesperson for the council said the authority would keep the issue under review with Cumbria Police.
