Murder probe after woman's body found in park

A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of a woman's body in a park.

Merseyside Police were called to Stanley Park in Liverpool at about 17:25 BST and found the body in part of a walled garden.

The force said the body, of a white woman in her 70s, could have been there for a number of weeks.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said: "We understand that this will be distressing and worrying for people to hear and I want the local community to be reassured that we are doing everything in our powers to find the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice."

The woman was described as about 5ft 2in tall, of small build and with strawberry blonde hair.

She was found wearing a cerise pink Nike t-shirt.

Wilson added: "I would also ask any walkers or dog walkers who have been in the park, and specifically the area of the walled garden, in recent days or weeks - have you seen or heard anyone acting suspiciously or do you have any information which could assist our investigation? Please speak to us as a matter of urgency."

Officers have kept an area inside the park cordoned off. Merseyside Police said a mobile police station would be set up there on Sunday.
