Police were first called to Crimdon Dene on Tuesday morning

Controlled explosions are being carried out on a beach where suspected ordnance was found.

Emergency services were first called to Crimdon Dene beach, near Hartlepool, on Tuesday morning.

Cleveland Police said a quantity of suspected WW2 ordnance was discovered and had been set alight, leaving one person with minor burns.

The force said more items had since been found in the sand and a controlled explosion was taking place to dispose of them.

"The explosion may sound alarming due to the volume but there are no 'off-site' implications or risks to the public," it added.

"Thank you once more for your patience and understanding while police and our partners work towards a safe conclusion."

The area was cordoned off and people have been urged to contact the police immediately if they find any similar items.
