West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team got took sixth place in its international debut

A Cornish search and rescue team has secured a top 10 finish on its international debut at the SAR Games.

The annual competition, which was held in Norway, tests participating teams in scenarios such as search operations, simulated emergency incidents and first aid.

West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team took sixth place in its first-ever appearance at the event, which saw 17 teams involved.

Team chair Andy Brelsford said: "For a team making its first international appearance, finishing sixth is a fantastic achievement."

'Kraken attack'

Team member Phil Turner described the experience during the games, held from 24 to 26 April, as both challenging and rewarding.

"The event was particularly testing, with strong winds in the early hours of Saturday morning curtailing things slightly," he said.

"We had to contend with 30 scenarios in roughly 24 hours, including a Kraken attack, a minefield, and even delivering a baby in a car."

The team also thanked supporters at home and memebrs said they hoped to build on the success for future international competitions.

Last year, the team was awarded the King's Award for Voluntary Service.
