One resident of the Grampian tower reported hearing "a big scream and a crash of glass" on Friday morning

A man has died after falling from a block of flats in what police described as a "disturbance".

Officers were called to the 15-storey Grampian tower in Balmoral Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, shortly after 06:00 BST on Friday.

"His death is being treated as unexpected and is under investigation," an Essex Police spokesman said. It has not been confirmed which floor the man fell from.

Steve Watkins, 48, who lives on the 14th floor, said he heard "a big scream and a crash of glass" at about 05:45.

Daryll Hall, 36, added: "What I heard was a big bang followed by loads of screaming and shouting.

"Then, probably 10 minutes later, sirens."

One caller to the police raised "significant concern" for a man outside the flats

Detectives said their investigation - including door-to-door inquiries and CCTV checks - would continue into the evening.

No arrests have been made in connection with the man's death.

The force was first alerted to a "disturbance" at the Grampian tower block shortly after 06:00, followed by another call that raised "significant concern" for a man outside the property.

The spokesman added: "Anyone with information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, please get in contact with us."
