One person taken to hospital after flats fire

Flames could be seen coming from the roof of the flats on Maidenhead High Street

One person has been taken to hospital after breathing in smoke and residents were forced to leave their homes after a fire broke out in a block of flats.

Crews from 11 Berkshire fire stations along with five from Buckinghamshire were sent to the flats on High Street, Maidenhead, at about 21:40 BST on Monday.

Firefighters worked with Thames Valley Police to get residents to safety as crews worked to tackle the fire, which had spread into the roof space of the building, Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) said.

Crews remain at the site checking for hotspots, with people urged to avoid the high street between Crown Lane to St Mary's Close.

The fire service said thermal-imaging cameras and a drone from Berkshire Lowland Search and Rescue were used to find hotspots.

It added: "We would like to thank residents, local businesses and the wider community for their patience, cooperation and support while emergency services deal with this incident.

"We appreciate the disruption this may have caused and are grateful for their understanding."
