Man locked up for 'tirade of abuse' in town
GoogleA man has been jailed after he used a "tirade of abuse" towards members of the public in a town in Derbyshire.
Comments made by John Haynes included antisemitic remarks to one of his victims at shops in Ripley, after drinking heavily on the morning of 9 May, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
Haynes, 53, of Moseley Street in the town, spat on a police officer as he was arrested 10 days later, after neighbours reported him banging on doors and windows, swearing and behaving in an intimidating way.
At Derby Magistrates' Court on Thursday, he was sentenced to 26 weeks' imprisonment.
He had pleaded guilty to racially-aggravated harassment, using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress on both 9 and 19 May, and assaulting an emergency worker.
Sarah Lloyd, from the CPS, said: "John Haynes' alcohol-fuelled behaviour caused significant alarm and distress to members of the public.
"Everyone has the right to go about their daily lives without being subjected to abuse or intimidation.
"Where offenders use hostility based on protected characteristics, such as race or religion, we will always seek to reflect that seriousness in our prosecutions."
