A launderette in Jersey says it has had to pass on a 5% price rise in gas to its customers.

Island Energy temporarily increased the cost of gas as the war in the Middle East continues.

The owner of Town Mills Laundrette, Rene Toudic, said about 40% of his costs were gas, so a 5% increase in his bill had a big impact.

He said he had to transfer the whole price rise to his customers this time, having absorbed other cost increases, such as water, earlier this year.

He said: "I've got six heaters here for drying the clothes – all gas - and I've got gas for heating up the water to wash my clothes."

Toudic added he was not surprised by the price increase and said Island Energy had been good at communicating the changes.

Toudic thought there may be further price increases in the short term but was reassured the supply of gas would not be affected.

"I've spoken to two people at (Island Energy) that have alleviated any problems with supply of gas.

"We get most of a our gas from America via Europe and that link is not expected to change."
