A viable pipe bomb-type device has been found on a car windscreen in Londonderry.

Police were alerted to reports of a loud bang in the Nelson Drive area of the Waterside at about 12:30 BST on Tuesday.

Officers found a car window had been smashed and a pipe bomb-type device left on the windscreen.

Police and Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) responded to the incident and erected cordons in the area while examinations were carried out.

Appeal for information

The device was later declared viable and removed from the scene for further forensic examination.

The cordons remained in place for several hours but were lifted later on Tuesday.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
