At least 23 people have been injured in a shooting at a lakeside party in Oklahoma, local officials say.

The shooting took place near Arcadia Lake in eastern Edmond, about 13 miles north of Oklahoma City, at a large gathering of young adults around 21:00 local time on Sunday, police said.

The injuries range in severity and include gunshot wounds, police said. Several people were taken to hospital, while some drove themselves.

No arrests have been made, but police do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

Police said the incident occurred during "an unsanctioned party that began after dark" that was advertised on social media.

A leaflet seen on social media detailed an event called Sunday Funday, which was scheduled to take place near the lake on Sunday evening, US media report.

"This is obviously a very terrifying situation and we understand the concern from the public and those involved and we are working extremely hard to find the suspects," police spokesperson Emily Ward said.

A hospital system spokesperson said nine people were at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City, and three others were at Integris Health Edmond Hospital, the BBC's US partner, CBS News, reported.

The spokesperson said the patients were still being assessed late Sunday night.

Arcadia Lake is an artificial reservoir that is also popular for fishing, picnics and camping.

Police have set up a reunification centre for families at a nearby Walmart, according to local media.
