'Landmark' chimney to undergo repairs

Months-long repairs to a Grade II listed chimney will begin on Monday.

Specialist contractors will mend cracks in the brickwork as well as repoint areas of stonework and replace damaged or missing bricks on Dixon's Chimney in Carlisle.

Standing about 270ft (82m) tall, it was built for an adjoining cotton mill in 1863, according to Cumberland Council.

Work is expected to be completed next spring.

Describing the structure as a "key landmark" in the city, the council said it was previously restored in 1999 using funding from Heritage England, the Lottery Fund and Carlisle City Council.
