A man has been taken to hospital after an assault in Nottingham city centre.

Officers were called to reports a man had been attacked in Old Market Square at 23:17 BST on Monday.

A man in his 40s was found with head and facial injuries, which Nottinghamshire Police said were not believed to be life-altering or life-threatening.

An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of committing grievous bodily harm, threats to kill, threatening behaviour, racially aggravated harassment and criminal damage.

Police have urged any witnesses to "get in touch without delay"

A cordon remained in place in Old Market Square on Tuesday morning.

Det Ch Insp Claire Gould said it was not thought any weapons were involved.

She added: "Despite the arrest our investigation remains ongoing and it is important anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any relevant footage, gets in touch without delay.

"The Old Market Square is likely to have been busy at the time and we believe there will be people who can help with our inquiries."
