A peregrine falcon chick that was the last to hatch at a cathedral has died.

The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust said the fourth chick "could not get the food it needed", but the other three seemed to be doing well.

The chick was alive on Friday "but it did not appear to survive the night", the trust added, with the recent cold weather also possibly to blame.

"Boudica and Alban have proven to be very good parents, so hopefully the [others] will thrive," said a spokesperson.

The four eggs were a record number for the pair, with three having been laid each year since 2023.

Last month it was revealed no further action would be taken against a man who had been seen destroying the eggs last year.

The trust said the persistent cold weather could have been a factor in the chick's death

The trust said: "We appreciate that it is sad and upsetting seeing the death of a chick in the nest tray, but we are viewing what happens in nature up close on the webcam.

"Nature is taking its course, but that can mean an emotional rollercoaster as we watch on."
