Police work with sports clubs after burglaries

Police officers in Cornwall have worked with sports clubs to improve security of high-value equipment after a string of raids.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the initiative followed a series of burglaries in south-west England where thousands of pounds worth of tractors, mowers and other equipment was stolen.

The force said officers attended an event organised by the Cornwall Football Association and Grounds Management Association to promote good practice in keeping "equipment safe and secure".

A spokesperson said the burglaries had a "significant financial impact" on clubs.

Police said in September that 35 incidents had taken place throughout Devon and Cornwall since 1 March, including the theft of a £30,000 ride-on lawn mower and trailer from Ogwell Youth Football Club, near Newton Abbot, Devon, and a £16,500 tractor stolen from Bude Town Football Club in Cornwall.

The force said it offered clubs the use of forensic markers to help combat the problem.

It said the technology allowed it to return stolen property to its rightful owner if recovered.

Advice was also shared on how to store equipment, security tips and DNA property marking, the force added.

The spokesperson said: "Sport clubs house a range of equipment, including some farm and plant machinery, all of which are vital to their daily running.

"That's why it's important for us to team up with partner agencies at prevention events like these in Cornwall, working with clubs to help protect their equipment from thieves, prevent further incidents and deter offenders.
