Lancashire's fleet of snow and ice gritters are on standby to play a role in dealing with the heatwave.

Road chiefs are set to load them up with crushed stone and sand so they can be deployed to repair surfaces that crack or melt as temperatures are expected to top 30C in parts of the county.

Roads can reach temperatures of up to 55c in hot weather, with melted tar sticking to vehicle tyres.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "Gritters were deployed during a recent spell of hot weather in a number of locations across Lancashire, including Clitheroe Road next to the mountain pass of Pendle Hill. We are ready to deploy gritters again, if required."
