A teenage driver has admitted causing the death of a 17-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash in Stoke-on-Trent.

Alex Woodward was struck by a BMW 1 Series as he crossed the road on Dawlish Drive, Bentilee, on Friday 17 October, and died in the early hours of the next day.

The 17-year-old driver — who cannot be named due to his age — pleaded guilty to a number of offences on Monday, also including failing to stop after an accident.

He has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 25 February.

The teenager had overtaken another car at excessive speed when he hit Mr Woodward, said Staffordshire Police.

He did not stop at the scene, but handed himself in two days later, said the force.

He also admitted he did not have a licence or insurance and did not know the speed limit on Dawlish Drive.

He appeared before Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday.

"I'm pleased that we've been able to secure this outcome for Alex's family, who have been left devastated by what happened," said Det Insp Becky Collier.
