More than £170k awarded to improve local facilities

Community venues and public spaces across a Surrey borough are to benefit from grants aimed at improving local facilities.

Surrey Heath Borough Council said that the funding was from the latest call for the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funds, where more £170,000 have been awarded.

Upgrades include new play equipment, enhancements to community venues, accessibility improvements, solar panels and CCTV cameras.

Portfolio holder for built environment and regulation, Alan Ashbery, said that accessing high-quality community hubs and leisure facilities was vital.

Ashbery said: "The projects support the council's goals of creating healthier, more inclusive communities and protecting the environment."

The funding comes from payments made by developers to support local infrastructure, the council said.

Funding included CCTV upgrades in Camberley town centre and Old Dean, as well as resurfacing at Old Dean Recreational Ground.

Parity for Disability also received grants to improve accessibility facilities, as well as a Public Spaces Protection Order signage upgrade to reflect recent changes to the orders aimed to help tackle anti-social behaviour.
