Repairs have started on a Grade II-listed bridge several months after a police car went through it after an officer's laptop became lodged in the steering column.

One lane has been closed on Worcester Bridge, in Worcester, while damaged stonework is repaired using specialist conservation techniques.

The accident took place in March when a West Mercia Police driver lost the ability to steer when a loose laptop became trapped, resulting in a low-speed collision with the bridge parapet.

Worcestershire County Council said the work was expected to take up to three weeks, with motorists warned to expect delays, particularly at peak times. Pedestrian access will remain available.

Following the crash, West Mercia Police said the incident had been reviewed by the force's Professional Standards Department, and no misconduct was identified.

However, both driver and passenger were instructed to undergo "reflective practice" with the driving training team.

Worcester Bridge was first opened in 1771 and crosses the River Severn.
