The Callerton Hill site is estimated to contain about 400 tonnes of waste

A man has been arrested after an illegal waste dump was found near an airport.

An estimated 400 tonnes of commercial waste was discovered at Callerton Hill near Newcastle Airport in the summer, alongside further dumps at the former Dewhirst Site in Peterlee and Hart Quarry in Hartlepool.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested at a property near Preston, Lancashire, in connection with the airport site, the Environment Agency (EA) said. It follows the arrest of a 32-year-old man in Sunderland over the other two sites.

Gary Wallace, of the EA, said: "Illegal waste sites are a blight on our communities and the environment, and we're determined to bring those behind them to justice."

The 29-year-old was arrested on Monday in a joint operation involving Lancashire Police and the EA.

He has since been released on bail.

The EA said all three sites were reported over the summer, before being shut down and concrete blocks put in place to stop access.

The Callerton site has since been cleared by the owner.
