Police said the suspect escaped lawful custody at the Queen's Medical Centre on Monday afternoon

A man has been arrested after a suspect escaped custody at a hospital in Nottingham.

Nottinghamshire Police said the suspect "escaped lawful custody" at the Queen's Medical Centre just before 14:30 BST on Monday.

The man, who is not considered dangerous, had been detained earlier on Monday after failing to appear in court over a shop theft, the force added.

He was found in the hospital a short time later and arrested, with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - which runs the hospital - adding some patients "were temporarily evacuated" from the emergency department as a result.

"The area has now safely returned to normal," the NHS trust said.

"We are grateful for the support of the public and the professional actions of our staff and partners."
