Palestine Action factory break-in captured on bodycam, court told

Footage from a body-worn camera shows Palestine Action supporters breaking into a factory associated with an Israel-linked defence firm, a court heard.

In a video played before a jury at the Old Bailey, activists in red boiler suits can be heard swearing as they are confronted by two security guards.

One of the guards, Billy Dennis, told the court on Monday intruders smashed the windows of a Land Rover and that he was "struck in the face" during the early morning raid on Instro Precision in Sandwich, Kent, on 17 June, 2024.

Nine defendants are accused of criminal damage, burglary with intent and violent disorder. They deny the charges.

The defendants were alleged to be members or supporters of Palestine Action, which had targeted Instro Precision for its links to Elbit Systems.

After the video was played in court showing Dennis chasing intruders while raising a large object, he said he made "contact" with two people with the object. He described it as a "rubber handle".

The jury heard he did not "go to work wanting to cause harm to people" and said he was "fearing for his life".

On Tuesday fellow security guard Michael Robins told the court he had been sprayed with red paint out of view of cameras before entering the building.

He had gone after six members of the team in red, he said, to "prevent further damage".

The court heard he and Dennis had been trying to "allow them to stay in there and try to calm the situation."

Robins told jurors he later began feeling the effects of being sprayed, saying he experienced "breathing difficulties and a burning sensation".

The prosecution allege a team in black were there to overwhelm the guards, so a team in red could enter the building and "smash up as much property as they could".

The nine men and women on trial allegedly included members of the team in red, one of the team in black and others who helped at the perimeter and with travel and other arrangements.

The defendants are: Julija Brigadirova, 34, from Manchester; Nasser Akhtar, 39, of Crystal Palace; Elliot Wilson, 26 from Liverpool; Maximillian Dixon, 31, of Brockley, south-east London; Nirad Abrol, 27, of Birmingham; Seirol Davies, 31, from Plymouth; Xavi Davies, 23, of Binfield, Berkshire; Eoin O'Meara, 36, of Bristol; and Hannah Davidson, 53, of Edinburgh.

The case continues.
