Consultation opens on planned motorway services

Developers behind proposals for a new motorway services in Doncaster have opened a consultation on the plans.

Welcome Break has proposed a service area east of Junction 37 of the A1(M) off Barnsley Road.

The firm said it was seeking feedback on the plans from residents and other stakeholders, with the consultation set to close on 7 October.

In 2017, plans from Moto Hospitality Ltd for a motorway services were submitted for the same area, but they were refused by councillors and then thrown out after an appeal.

Welcome Break said the new scheme would provide modern facilities for motorists, HGV drivers, coach operators and other road users, with places to eat and rest, fuel facilities and electric vehicle charging.

About 355 car parking spaces are proposed, including what would be the "largest ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hub" in the region, as well as space for 70 HGVs, 14 coaches, 10 caravans and 16 motorcycles.

It is estimated the motorway services would create 200 jobs, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Welcome Break said it was running an in-person consultation event at Sprotbrough Church Hall on 23 September, but added that information on the plans could also be found at the Welcome Break Doncaster website.
