A call for speed bumps is being debated by a council

A petition calling for speed bumps on a city road, where there are two parks and a school, is to be discussed after residents raised concerns about speeding.

Double yellow lines were recently painted on a stretch of Bourges Boulevard, between Occupation Road and Searjeant Street in Peterborough, prompting some residents to complain a lack of parking resulted in people speeding on the road.

A petition which has more than 50 valid signatures has called for speed bumps to be installed, to help ensure the safety of children using the nearby school and parks.

The proposals will be discussed at a cabinet meeting at the council on Tuesday.

The petition states: "We would like speed bumps installed along the road from Najib's Food Store to Occupation Road because on many occasions we are aware of speeding traffic."

Javed Akhtar, a Conservative councillor representing North Ward, said: "For traffic and speeding [the road] is pretty bad.

"On this particular road I would like to see some road bumps and to lift some restrictions on parking because it really gives the residents a boost if they've got more parking there.

"If we don't have the cars parked, there's more speeding - it gives them a clear way."

He also said the school would benefit from a crossing.

"It would be an ideal thing for the safety of the children," he added.

"Both things [the speed bumps and the crossing] are for the safety of residents and children, which is paramount.

"I don't know about the cost but at the end of the day both things are really needed."
