Shop fined after rats, mice and cockroaches found
GoogleA Birmingham shop which was found to be infested with rats, mice and cockroaches has been fined £12,000.
Altibian Supermarket, in Stratford Road, was found guilty of three food hygiene offences.
Hannan Aurangzeb, prosecuting on behalf of the city council, told magistrates that a food hygiene inspection on 8 July 2025 uncovered evidence of mice, rats and cockroaches at the premises.
Inspectors also found mouse droppings beside food products and a bag of rice that had been chewed by pests.
No representatives from Altibian General Trading Ltd, which owns the store, were present at Thursday's hearing, and the case was proved in their absence.
Aurangzeb said the store had also failed to keep the premises clean and had not done enough to stop food being contaminated.
One offence related to failing to control pests, with inspectors finding evidence of rats, mice and cockroaches inside the store.
A second offence related to poor cleanliness and maintenance at the supermarket.
The third offence related to food safety, with inspectors finding mouse droppings on and next to food packaging intended for sale.
The company was also ordered to pay a surcharge of £4,800 and prosecution costs of £844.
