A man who stabbed a friend in a beer garden following an argument over money has been jailed.

Graham Butterworth, 49, attacked the man at The Manvers Arms, in Main Road, Radcliffe-on-Trent, in the early evening of 31 May, Nottinghamshire Police said.

The victim was placed in an induced coma, officers said, spending almost four weeks in hospital and risked a leg amputation due to a damaged artery.

Butterworth, of Queens Road, Radcliffe-on-Trent, who had earlier pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place, was jailed for 12 years at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday.

Butterworth, who was tracked down by armed officers to a house nearby shortly after the attack, was also sentenced to a further three years on licence.

When confronted, he told officers they would find the five-inch kitchen knife hidden in a garden shed.

In an impact statement read to the court, police said, the victim detailed the effect the attack has had on his life and how it had left him anxious about being around people in public out of fear of being harmed.

Det Con Andrew Sansom said: "This was an awful and completely unprovoked attack on what should have otherwise been a pleasant evening socialising at the pub.

"Carried out in front of other pub-goers, including children, it left those who witnessed this stabbing understandably frightened and resulted in a man suffering serious injuries."
