Residents evacuated from a street in Sheffield after bomb disposal experts were called have spent the night away from their homes.

A 100m (328ft) cordon was put in place around a property in Mapplebeck Road, in High Green, on Tuesday, following a forensic search, which began last week.

South Yorkshire Police said a 36-year-old woman had been charged under the Explosive Substances Act on Monday as a result of the operation and had been remanded in custody.

On Wednesday the force said the cordon was "expected to remain in place throughout today" while work to make the area safe continues, with a number of roads closed as a result.

The force said the evacuation of a number of surrounding properties was "deemed necessary ... to enable emergency services and specialists to ensure safety".

Police said no injuries had been reported and other emergency services were at the scene as a precaution.

Residents who were advised to leave their homes were directed to a nearby rest centre.

"We don't underestimate the impact this has had on those affected and want to thank residents for their continued patience, understanding and cooperation," a police spokesperson said.

"We understand how challenging this situation is for local people and remain committed to ensuring everyone affected receives the support they need while this important safety work continues."
