Gritter lorries have been sent to assist after a road become unsafe to drive on when 20 drums of oil were fly-tipped on it.

Staff were contacted on Wednesday about the incident on Hollyfast Lane on the outskirts of the city, Coventry City Council said.

"Our crews quickly attended the site and shut it off before anyone could have an accident," the authority said. "Since then, they've been working tirelessly to clean the road."

A road closure is in place and people have been asked to avoid the area. Nearby residents who contacted the council have been thanked.

They added: "We'd like to say thank you to the residents who made us aware of this issue so we could act quickly.

"A road closure remains in place and we ask people to avoid the area if possible."

Anyone with any information about the incident was urged to contact the authority.
