'Bittersweet' closure for 60-year-old tool shop
BBCA couple who are closing their tool shop after almost sixty years said they have the "fondest memories" of their years trading.
David and Maureen Hunt, have run the shop on Knowl Hill in Maidenhead, Berkshire since 1967. David had previously sold tools out of a caravan at his father's garden centre in Holyport.
It sold tools to tradespeople and DIY enthusiasts as well as retailing industrial machinery over the six decades.
David, who is now 80, said it was the "right time to retire".
He said the shop developed a "community atmosphere similar to a pub".
"I have fond memories of running this place and I shall miss the people immensely who were all characters.
"We've had our ups and downs. It's been a long time and a steady job but things change over the years," he added.
He said the growth of online retail had affected trade at the shop in recent years.
"I've done 15 more years than the average person and its time to relax and enjoy life now.
"I feel the time is right to retire, with the economy and old age against me."
He said he has enjoyed the community aspect of the shop and thanked his "local and loyal customers".
"It's quite a social little place, you get a load of characters turning up," he said "we get people who come in every day just to chat."
His wife Maureen said closing the store was "bittersweet".
"We have had fun running the tool shop together, raising our children and watching them run and play down the aisles."
"It is sad to say goodbye, but we will take away the fondest of memories," she added.
The tool shop is likely to be converted into offices for commercial use.
