Firework Control Zones were launched in three Glasgow areas this year

Firework control zones in Glasgow will not expand into a city-wide scheme, despite the programme being hailed a success this year.

The council introduced the firework control zones for the first time last month across three areas - Pollokshields, Govanhill and Broomhouse.

A full meeting of Glasgow City Council heard that those zones will only be reviewed after the designated trial period ends, which is anticipated to be November 2027.

The zones meant it was is a criminal offence for a member of the public to set off a firework from 1 November to 10 November, including in private spaces such as back gardens.

The trial scheme met with a mixed reaction from locals in the affected areas, with some previously telling BBC Scotland News that it had made no difference - while others said it worked well.

Councillor Laura Doherty said: "All three zones were successful with improved coordination between agencies and notable reduction in firework related disorders compared to recent years.

"The council is committed to reviewing the zones after the designated period has ended which is anticipated to be in November 2027.

"This review will consider the effectiveness of the zones, by reducing firework related anti-social behaviour and harm."

Councillor John Daly then asked if there was a possibility of working towards a broader citywide, firework control zone.

Councillor Doherty responded: "Currently the council is not planning to implement a city-wide firework control zone.

"The approach would not be in the spirit of the legislation which is intended to be a community led process supported by partnership working.

"Applications for the firework control zone 2026 will open again in early New Year."
