More than 80 new council homes are set to be built after Hull City Council secured £9.2m in government funding.

The money, awarded through the Social and Affordable Homes Programme (SAHP), will support developments across six sites in the city.

The latest grant of £6.6m will fund the construction of 51 homes at four sites, building on an earlier award of £2.6m for a further 32 properties.

The council said the funding marked a significant step towards its target of delivering 840 new council homes as part of its housing growth plan.

The 83 homes will be spread across sites at Snowden Way, Lindsey Place, Campbell Court, Oriel Grove, Ellerburn Avenue, and Kingsfold at Kingswood.

Councillor Paul Drake-Davis, portfolio holder for economic renewal and housing said it was a positive development. He said: "This first allocation for Hull from the SAHP will allow the council to build dozens of new homes in different areas of the city for those on the council's housing waiting list.

"We're responding to the housing crisis in this country by building much-needed council houses."

He added other sites have been identified that could be built on in the future, subject to further successful funding bids.

The council said it had already committed to 266 homes, with more developments planned across the city.
