Saints fans are in shock after Southampton were thrown out of football's Championship play-offs.

The club were found to have spied on a Middlesbrough training session ahead of the semi-final first leg and have also been handed a four-point deduction in the Championship for next season.

Middlesbrough will now play Hull in Saturday's final at Wembley, with the winner being promoted to the Premier League.

Our reporter Briony Leland went down to The Saints Pub in Millbrook, Southampton, shortly after the news broke to hear what fans made of it all.

News imageChris Jewell has short grey white hair and blue eyes. He wears a blue anorak.

Chris Jewell, 67, is a lifelong Saints fan and had tickets for Saturday.

"It is unfair. I know we've done wrong, but at the end of the day, how can they stop it when they've sold all these tickets and people have got all their coaches booked?

"I'm so sick, and any other Southampton supporter must feel exactly the same as I feel. I'm absolutely gutted.

"I've got two sons that go, they're seasoned ticket holders. I've got grandchildren that go, they've all got season tickets, we've all got tickets to go to Wembley on Saturday. That's the highlight of my life to see my grandchildren, because they both work, and it's hard to see them when you've got a hard life, separate lives.

"Every time I see them down at St Mary's, it's a family event anyway, but this is even bigger. Southampton has been treated so wrong, it's a gutter."

Ben believes the English Football League (EFL) wanted to make an example of Southampton.

"It didn't surprise me because I know that they don't like Southampton - we get penalised for a lot of things over all the matches we've had.

"Fines or points deductions I can understand, but that is very harsh. They're making an example of Southampton for misdemeanours like that, and they're not the only club doing it. Other clubs are obviously doing the spying things, it hasn't come to light yet.

"It's also the cost of all the coaches going out there, all the hotels being booked, the trains, so financially for the fans going there, it's very, very harsh. How are they going to release those hotel rooms or get their money back?"

News imageJustin Rogerson has short grey hair on the sides of his head and wears a blue sports t-shirt.

Justin Rogerson, 55, is a Man United fan, but still thinks Saints were treated harshly.

"I think it's a wrong decision... a fine, points deduction [would be enough].

"It's stupid, pathetic. People were preparing [to go]. I'm a taxi driver, people asked me to go out to Wembley on Saturday and I said 'no', because I didn't know what was happening.

"But it was in the rules. Leeds got caught with it six years ago and they amended the rules, but I still think justice hasn't been done."

News imageChris Lewis wears a black New York cap and a brown jacket over a white shirt. He has a light brown beard.

Chris Lewis, 43, is another lifelong Saints fan.

"I've been to games all season. To get to this point and then all this to come out and to be disciplined in that way, it doesn't feel right.

"I don't think there was much cheating involved because when I watched the first half of the game, I thought Middlesbrough were the better team. They played the better football. Saints didn't really play very well so I don't see in which way they really gained any advantage. It went to extra time so I don't think there was any advantage gained from what they've been accused of.

"We had a good run in the FA Cup. Played well, beat good teams like Arsenal and stuff like that, unbeaten run at home, and we deserved to be where we were. So I feel a bit of injustice, big time."
