"I've been so incredibly lucky to have been the head teacher of such a wonderful school," said Lynn Knapp, as she finished her final day of a 44-year teaching career.

Knapp retired from Windmill Primary School in Headington, Oxford, on Friday - a moment she described as "incredibly emotional".

She looked back on 44 years of teaching, 30 of which as a head teacher.

Knapp added it had been a "teary" last day of term, as the school also parted with its Year 6 pupils, and she is now looking to dedicate more time to her passions, including dancing and caring for the environment.

Knapp described her last day at the school as "absolutely surreal"

Over the years, the head teacher has witnessed the school capacity being expanded from 480 to 630 places and has been vocal about issues such as dangerous parking and driving putting children at risk.

She said that on Thursday everyone had "a very big party".

"[It was] absolutely surreal in the way that my staff, my parents and my children made it such a special day for my leaving," she added.

Knapp said she had not had much time to think about what she wanted to do now but she had some ideas.

"I'm known as the dancing head teacher and my passion is dancing and music," she said.

"I want to do more adult ballet and I want to do some more adult dance, so that I can learn and extend my skills."

She said staff at the school had given her a paddleboard as a leaving present, which she now also wants to try.

"I'm very passionate about the environment and doing something to slow down climate change," she added.

"I would like to volunteer with maybe one of our local nature groups, so that I can feel I'm doing something real to support it."
