Bid to free lorry trapped under railway bridge

Watch: Lorry trapped under York railway bridge

Work is under way to remove a lorry trapped beneath a bridge on a busy route into York.

The HGV became wedged under the old railway bridge on Huntington Road, in the Heworth area of the city, just after 11:00 BST, with police and highways officers at the scene.

The road is closed in both directions between Haleys Terrace and Park Grove, according to traffic information service.

North Yorkshire Police said the road and cycle path had been shut "while the lorry is safely recovered and for the bridge to be inspected by highways engineers".

The force advised motorists to avoid the area until further notice and follow local diversions.

No one was injured in the incident, police said.
