An historic theatre is set to undergo a major multi-million pound redevelopment that will ensure it is "fit for the 21st Century".

Salisbury Playhouse has unveiled plans for the £22m redevelopment that will include upgrading its technical facilities, making the venue fully accessible and meeting its net zero targets.

The Stage the Future project is expected to be completed over the next three years, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the building.

Rosa Corbishley, Co-CEO and Executive Director, said: "This is a pivotal moment for the Playhouse – it's a chance to honour five decades of world-class theatre and ensure the next 50 years are even greater."

"Our community wants the playhouse to thrive, and as one of the South West's only full professional producing theatres, we are a core backbone of British theatrical talent," Corbishley added.

The start date for the works is yet to be confirmed as the team has only raised £5m towards their £22m target.

The investment, described as making the "venue fit for the 21st Century," is also intended to benefit the next generation of theatre-makers by bolstering the theatre's community and education programmes.

The work is also expected to provide a boost to Salisbury's economy, with the playhouse already supporting around 350 jobs in the local area.

Salisbury MP John Glen said he hoped the investment would "galvanise" the local communities.
