Building starts on new railway station
Greater Cambridge PartnershipWork has started on a new town's railway station where up to 11,000 homes are being built.
The station, at Waterbeach near Cambridge, is about 1.5 miles (2.4km) away from the existing one, and it is due to open in 2028.
The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP), a transport delivery body, and Homes England are funding the project.
Brian Milnes, chairman of the GCP, said: "This is about more than a station — we're delivering a whole package of transport projects in Waterbeach."
Greater Cambridge PartnershipThe station will link to a travel hub that includes a 1,600-space park and ride, a new busway between Waterbeach and Cambridge and an off-road walking and cycling route known as a greenway.
Milnes said: "We're making good progress delivering a new station for Waterbeach, which has unlocked planning permission for 4,500 new homes."
The new town could eventually have up to 11,000 homes, north of the existing village of Waterbeach, which has about 5,000 residents at the moment.
Greater Cambridge PartnershipThe new station will have wider platforms, an accessible footbridge and lifts, 100 cycle spaces and electric vehicle charging points.
The current station is on the south-eastern corner of Waterbeach on Clayhithe Road. It will stay open until the new one, off Bannold Drove, is operational.
Campaigners have asked for both stations to remain open, arguing that closing the existing station could leave some residents isolated.
The Department for Transport will consult on the future of the current station after the new one opens.
The GCP said the consultation process would be led by the Department for Transport.
