Petrol bombs, fireworks and bottles thrown at police

Petrol bombs, fireworks and bottles have been thrown at police as they dealt with "sporadic disorder" in Londonderry.

Police said masked individuals lit fires on roads in the Strabane Old Road and Irish Street areas of the Waterside at about 19:30 BST on Sunday.

Some police vehicles were damaged, but there were no reports of injuries or damage to properties.

An investigation is under way to identify all those involved, police said.

In a statement, area commander Ch Supt Gillian Kearney, said "courageous and dedicated officers" had put themselves in harm's way to protect the local community.

"Valuable police resources were used to deal with this situation last night, resources which should have been available to help victims of crime," she said.

"It is completely unacceptable."

A local community group, the Hillcrest Trust, condemned what it called the "organised, mindless violence" and those behind it.

In a statement, it said those who "manipulate young people into committing acts of violence" offered nothing to the largely-nationalist Top Of The Hill community.
