Revived show made city feel like 'a big village'

The revival of a community show after a 15-year absence has made a city feel like "a big village", proud organisers have claimed.

The Durham City Show, which had been running for at least 60 years before coming to an end in 2011, returned on Sunday, showcasing vegetables, fruits, flowers, bakers and crafters.

Committee chair Benedict Douglas said more than 1,500 people attended the event and hundreds of exhibits were entered into categories including "rudest vegetable or vegetable disaster" and heaviest apple.

"I think our only problem for next year is we might not have enough tables to fit everything in," he said.

"Everybody was just really happy and people were seeing their neighbours and they were admiring all the things.

"It just made the town feel like a big village. It was lovely."

Douglas said although the carrot and leek sections had fewer entries, other categories made up for it.

"We were delighted with the number that we got and the quality of the ones we got was terrific," the Durham University lecturer said.

"The rude vegetable was certainly rude. So that was delivered."

Young exhibitors were also recognised, while pets got a chance to shine at a dog show.
