Three black bin bags in a crevice led to a call to Derbyshire Police

Mountain rescuers were sent by police to investigate a suspicious item in the Peak District - only to discover dumped camping kit.

A member of the public walking near Kinder Scout raised the alarm over a "large suspicious item" at the bottom of a crevice near the Crowden Tower outcrop at about 10:00 BST on Saturday.

Kinder Mountain Rescue Team said Derbyshire Police requested its assistance and a six-volunteer hill party was sent to investigate.

Using a 15m extendable reach pole and hook usually deployed for water rescues, the team recovered three black bin bags.

A Kinder spokesperson said of the two-hour callout: "As we half expected, the items turned out to be three black bin bags full of fly camping rubbish.

"The team carried the bags off the hill and disposed of them back at base."
