Essential long-term work on a breakwater is set to continue over the coming weeks.

Guernsey Ports said specialist contractors would be carrying out further masonry repointing on the Castle Cornet breakwater.

It said it followed repointing work last year on the southern end of the breakwater nearest the lighthouse, where the structure was exposed to the "full force" of the weather and sea, where work would continue before the northern section was tackled.

Joe Armstrong, Guernsey Ports project manager said: "The Castle Breakwater plays a vital role in protecting St Peter Port Harbour, so regular inspections are essential to identify areas where preventative maintenance is needed."

He said: "The repointing was deferred until the castle bridge was closed so that we could complete this maintenance without creating any additional inconvenience for the public."

The bridge's 95m (312ft) concrete deck and single-span approach bridge are being replaced in a £6.2m project that started this month and is expected to last eight months.
