Green in line to be West Midlands chief constable

The acting chief constable of West Midlands Police has been named as the preferred candidate to get the job on a permanent basis.

The vacancy arose after the departure of Craig Guildford, who left following the controversy over Israeli football fans being banned from attending a match in Birmingham.

Green has stood in since January and has now been selected by West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Simon Foster as the preferred candidate for the job.

His name will be put before the West Midlands Police and Crime Panel on 28 September for their approval.

In July, Foster said three "eminently appointable" people had applied to become the chief constable and a series of selection panels followed, involving police officers, young people, police partners and a panel chaired by the PCC.

Green started his police career in South Yorkshire Police in the 1990s and moved to Greater Manchester Police in 2021, before joining the West Midlands force as deputy chief constable in April 2023.

He said: "I would be absolutely delighted to continue to serve the people of the West Midlands and honoured to lead our brilliant workforce of officers, staff and volunteers."
