A charity's annual cycling challenge will return in the summer after last year's event was cancelled when Storm Darragh made the route impassable.

Organisers hope the event on 9 August will raise thousands for Hope House Children's Hospices, with hundreds of cyclists setting off and finishing at its base in Morda, Oswestry.

They will take on two routes - 56 miles to Lake Vyrnwy and back, or a 70-mile distance to Lake Bala, which returns through one of the highest public road mountain passes in Wales.

Fundraiser at the charity Harriet Richards said a flurry of sign-ups were expected after their year off.

"We know how much our cyclists look forward to this event every year and we can't wait to welcome everyone once again to ride and to raise money which will help children with life-threatening conditions to live their best life," she said.

Alongside the event, there will be a virtual challenge - Cycle100 - which was launched in place of last year's cancelled challenge.

That will run throughout August and participants must raise £1 for every mile they cycle - alone, in a group or on a spin bike.
