Road planer to race F1 stock car at Irish Open
CWAAn Evesham man who spends his working days digging up roads is preparing to swap his road planer for a stock car, as he competes in an Irish racing championship this weekend.
Josh Spiers, 31, travels across the country operating machinery used to remove road surfaces before they are resurfaced. Away from work, he races Formula 1 stock cars, a hobby he says has become a big part of his life.
He will compete in the Irish Open Championship at Nutt's Corner Raceway, a big event in the stock car racing calendar, attracting drivers from across the world.
"The Irish Open is the first time we've been to Ireland to compete, so I'm looking forward to it," he said. "It's going to be a new challenge."
CWASpiers said he had been involved in the sport for years alongside his brother and uncle, before beginning to race four years ago.
"I enjoy the mechanical side of things as much as the racing and competitiveness. Being able to go in the garage and fix it and maintain it is enjoyable for me", he explained.
He added that his employer, Jet Plant Hire, had been flexible around competitions and race weekends.
His car also carries the company logo, which supports his involvement in the sport.
Spiers is also encouraging more young people to consider careers in road planing, an industry facing an ageing workforce.
"I can't imagine ever doing anything else," he said. "This job gives you the chance to travel to new places, and every single day is a fresh challenge."
