Bridget permanently joins the Scenes in the Square visitor trail after an "incredible" public reaction to her temporary addition

A statue of fictional diarist Bridget Jones is to be sited in Leicester Square permanently, after being added to the existing collection of movie-themed effigies.

It joins a collection of other statues reflecting significant moments and characters from cinema, including Harry Potter, Batman, Paddington and Mary Poppins.

Those behind the trail, which visitors can follow around the square, said the public's reaction to Bridget Jones' arrival in Leicester Square had been "incredible".

The Scenes in the Square trail launched in 2020 and is now home to 11 permanent statues.

Kirsty Tullett-Jones from Discover Leicester Square, said the Bridget Jones statue becoming a permanent feature "cements" the character in cultural history.

"With the trail already celebrating the very best of film, it felt only right to honour one of the most iconic rom-com characters of all time," she said.

Leicester Square was first home to a cinema in 1930, with its first premiere taking place in 1937.

The square has subsequently cemented its place in British cinema history and regularly plays host to some of the most high-profile events in the country's film calendar.

It also hosts regular new additions of temporary statues, such as the one of actor Daniel Kaluuya depicted in the film 'Get Out', in 2024.
