Temporary stops during bus station closure revealed

Temporary bus stops will be set up around Newcastle city centre while the Eldon Square Bus Station is closed for refurbishment.

Services will be diverted from 10 to 29 June during the work, which includes road resurfacing, repainting, changes to drainage and the upgrading of passenger information displays.

Pedestrians will still be able to access the entrance to the shopping centre.

Bus operator Nexus and Newcastle City Council said the works had been scheduled during the football off-season and away from other big events to minimise disruption.

Nexus's head of customer service operations John Souter said the work would ensure the station could be used for many years to come.

Extra information will be on display in the bus station, including maps highlighting the temporary stopping arrangements, but passengers are advised to allow extra time when connecting between services due to the changes.

Alternative stops for Go North North (GNE), Stagecoach North East (SNE), Arriva North East (ANE) and Peter Hogg (PH) during the closure are:

• 49 (SNE), 74 (GNE) and X47(SNE) - Stand Y, Haymarket Bus Station
• X74 (PH), X77 (SNE), X78 (SNE), X79(SNE), X87/X88 (SNE) - Stand X, Haymarket Bus Station
• 684 (GNE), 685 (SNE), X82 (SNE), X85(GNE) - Southbound Percy Street stop outside of Eldon Square bus station exit
• (GNE) 6, 47, X45 - Northbound Newgate Street stop outside St Andrew's Church
• 21, 22, 28, 28B, 29 (GNE), X12(ANE) and X21(GNE) - Southbound Newgate Street stop opposite St Andrew's Church
• (GNE) 10, 10a, 10b, 12 - Northbound Newgate Street stop, outside Premier Inn at The Gate
• (GNE) X1, X1a, X1b, X10 - Southbound opposite The Gate
• (GNE) X30, X31, X32, X70, X71, X72 and X73 - Southbound Newgate Street stop, opposite Maldron Hotel

At Haymarket Bus Station, service X46 (Gateshead Central Taxi) will temporarily use Stand R and services 355/356 will temporarily use Stand P.

During the closure, Stagecoach services 685 and X82 will also be unable to serve the stop on Gallowgate heading into Newcastle.
