Residents urge housing plans to be reconsidered
LDRSResidents have warned about a proposed housing development's impact on road safety.
Sunderland City Council's planning and highways committee will discuss proposals for land in the Doxford area adjacent to Burdon Road on Wednesday.
Homes by Esh is seeking permission to build 49 properties on former farmland as a well a new mini-roundabout. However, resident Heather Murdoch said she was "extremely concerned" about the road-traffic safety impact of the development.
The developer's technical director Dale Morris previously said the firm was committed to "bringing forward high-quality homes".
Murdoch said increased house building and associated traffic in the area had made a nearby intersection "increasingly dangerous".
Meanwhile local Paul Williams said residents were "not against development" but the proposed access routes to the site including the mini-roundabout.
'Hope concerns taken seriously'
A decision on the scheme had been due in March but councillors voted to defer so that an alternative western access site could be explored.
However, the current plans going to the planning committee are unaltered, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Liberal Democrat councillor Michael Peacock said: "People have not objected to the housing itself but simply the ill thought out access points.
"I hope residents' concerns are taken seriously by the planning and highways committee and they refuse permission until the developer can come up with a better proposal."
Ashbrooke Sports Club, which owns the site earmarked for the scheme, has previously said the plans would clear the club's debts and safeguard sporting provision in the city for decades to come.
A council committee report said the proposed southern vehicular access to the housing site could "manage the flow of incoming and outgoing traffic for both the new site and the existing residential properties".
